I diavoli di Palermo - On Line Sicilia

A Palermo circola una leggenda popolare a metà strada tra storia e folklore…

In uno dei quartieri più antichi e popolari della città, sorge uno dei monumenti più importanti del capoluogo siciliano: il palazzo normanno della Zisa a Palermo (dall’arabo Al-Aziza ovvero “la splendida”)
, all’ingresso sono raffigurati dei diavoli, che si dice custodiscano un immenso tesoro.
Il palazzo normanno della Zisa cominciato nel 1165, sotto Guglielmo I, fu portato a termine dal suo successore, Guglielmo II intorno al 1175 e fu inizialmente concepito come residenza estiva dei re.
In proposito, lo storico Giuseppe Pitrè scrisse:
“La difficoltà di contare esattamente i diavoli della Zisa è data dal fatto che alcune delle figure sono molto piccole e altre non intere, così c’è chi li conta e chi no”.
Ma nei secoli, come spesso avviene, l’illusione si è trasformata sempre di più in credenza e le raffigurazioni mitologiche sono entrate nel mito come “diaboliche”.
La leggenda palermitana dei diavoli della Zisa ha influenzato perfino il linguaggio della città, come dimostra il celebre modo di dire popolare “E chi su, li diavoli di la Zisa?” (“E cosa sono? I diavoli della Zisa?”) per indicare una circostanza in cui non tornano i conti.
